Local track clubs ready for AAU, TAAF championships

The AAU Junior Olympic Games and TAAF Games of Texas will have a strong Central Texas flavor to both events as the CP Classic, City of Cedar Park and Leander Texas Flash track clubs are sending multiple athletes to both upcoming events.

CP Classic

Gaby Aguilar and Ashley Isham will represent the CP Classic Track Club of Cedar Park as Junior Olympians at the 2005 AAU Junior Olympic Games Track and Field National Championships.

Isham brought home a pair of gold medals in youth girls' division, sweeping the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs for the second year in a row, winning the 1500 in a time of 4 minutes, 53.19 seconds and the 3000 in 10:48.69.

Aguilar ran strong to break through with a bronze medal, placing third in the midget girls' 3,000-meter in 13:05.42.

CP Classic also had several athletes advance at the TAAF Region 3 Championships with 14 athletes qualifying in 21 events for the Games of Texas.

Of those 21 events, nine came from first place finishes by Isham (junior girls' 1,600 and 3,200), Richard McEvoy-Kemp (intermediate boys' 1,600 and 3,200), Taylor Dayton (junior boys' 800, 1,600 and 3,200), Jesse Devlyn (bantam boys' 800 and 1,600), Kristen Adams (senior girls' 800), Maria Chronis (intermediate girls' 800), Andrew Stefani (pee wee boys' 800), Cecelia Forshee (junior girls' 800) and Matthew McKennon (midget boys' 1,600).

Also advancing for CP Classic to the Games of Texas are: Nikki Chronis in the midget girls' 800 (second); Chase Isham in the pee wee boys' 800 (second); Christopher House in the midget boys' 800 and 1,600 (third in both); Brian Carter in the junior boys' 800 (third) and Richard Doelger in the intermediate boys' 1,600 and 3,200 (second in both).

City of Cedar Park

The City of Cedar Park track club will be sending a combined 11 athletes to the AAU Junior Olympics and to the TAAF Games of Texas with all 11 qualifying at TAAF.

David Moritz was the lone AAU and TAAF qualifier for the track club, finished second in the sub-bantam boys' long jump (13 feet, 4.5 inches) for AAU and third in the bantam long jump (third, 13-3) for TAAF.

Six athletes finished in first place in their events at the TAAF qualifiers: Ashley Yebra in the bantam girls' shot put (16-11); Kellie Knippa in the bantam girls' long jump (11-0) and 100 meters (15.31); Onochie Eguzo in the midget boys' shot put (26-7); Brandon Keys in the midget boys' 800 (2:51.56) and Jennifer Snow in the junior girls' 400 (1:09.82).

Other TAAF qualifiers for City of Cedar Park were: Chijioke Eguzo in the pee wee boys' long jump (third); Ryan Lemmons in the bantam boys' 100 (third, 14.35) and 400 (third, 1:14.09); Megan Havener in the midget girls' 100 (third, 33.66); Amanda Moritz in the midget girls' 200 (third, 1:12.15); Armando Yebra in the midget boys' shot put (second, 25-6); Onochie Eguzo in the midget boys' long jump (second, 11-2) and 100 (third, 16.84); Brandon Keys in the midget boys' 400 (second, 1:13.02) and John Snow in the senior boys' 200 (second, 24.34) and 400 (second, 55.73).

Texas Flash

The Leander-based club will have 28 athletes advancing in 47 events to the Games of Texas.

The boys had five athletes win multiple events with Ronald Jones in the pee wee 100 (14.82), 200 (32.08) and 400 (1:13.44); Ethan Hoeft in the junior triple jump (34-8) and 200 (26.03); Tai Gadison in the midget 80 hurdles (13.66) and high jump (4-6); Thomas Gash in the midget long jump (15-1), 100 (12.92) and 200 (27.46) and Tyler Smith in the intermediate 100 (11.03) and 200 (22.50).

Other first-place finishes from the boys came from: Drew Coleman in the intermediate 300 hurdles (42.81); Bryce Elarms in the intermediate triple jump (39-3); Jonathan Kelley in the intermediate 800 (2:07.54); Douglas Kelley in the intermediate 400 (49.96); Clayton Austin in the pee wee 50 (9.18) and Justin Davis in the junior 100 (12.90).

The first place finishes for the girls came from Khourtni Thompson in the pee wee long jump (5-2); Peyton Ramsey in the pee wee 100 (1:26.12) and 200 (3:19.09); Kaleigh Frazier in the intermediate 100 (12.58) and Angela Gash in the intermediate long jump (16-1), 100 (12.58), 200 (26.53) and 400 (1:01.22).

Also advancing for boys were: Thomas Wilson in the pee wee 50 (third, 9.28) and 400 (1:27.89); Zach Santiago in the junior triple jump (third, 33-5), long jump (second, 16-1) and 110 hurdles (second, 18.22); Justin Davis in the junior 200 (second, 29.30), the 110 hurdles (third, 18.44) and 300 hurdles (second, 47.00); Chris Lopez in the junior 400 (1:12.72); Jonathan Shipe in the intermediate 400 (1:06.66); Levi McLemore in the midget 100 (second, 15.14) and 400 (third, 1:14.71); D'Andre Day in the bantam long jump (second, 13-9) and 200 (second, 29.57) and Tory Dominguez in the bantam 100 (second, 14.19) and 200 (third, 30.93).

Girls advancing in TAAF were: Jacqueline Wilson in the junior 400 (second, 1:13.41); Priscillia Martinez in the junior 400 (third, 1:13.49); Niaya Gadison in the pee wee 400 (second, 1:57.28) and 800 (second, 4:12.38); Elisa Martinez in the intermediate 400 (third, 1:07.72) and 300 hurdles (second, 1:01.78) and Jasmine King in the midget 100 (third, 15.34).
