The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Games of Texas was a huge success for both the city of Cedar Park and for several athletes in various events.
Overflow crowds at the swimming and wiffleball venues at Elizabeth Milburn Park kept the parks and recreation department on their toes during the three-day event, sponsored by AT&T, but director Tim Dean was very happy with the turnout.
“Our staff did an amazing job on all three days, especially when things started moving on Saturday and Sunday,” Dean said. “Everything worked out great, the turnout was great and it was just a great success all the way around.”
Dean also added that the crowds were more than he anticipated for the wiffleball tournament, with wiffleball being added to the Games of Texas for the first time this year.
Upper Deck, one of the local teams from Cedar Park, claimed the Division II championship with a 6-2 record, defeating BALCO in back-to-back games on Sunday to win the championship.
The members of Upper Deck (Justin Regehr, Dillon Deckert, Brett Wright, Sean Lutz, Dalton Deckert) are all either current or former students at Cedar Park.
The Division I title belonged to TC35 with a 5-0 record.
The highlight from the three-day swim meet came from Laura Holt Kownslar with wins in the adult (25-39 age group) 100 individual medley and the 50-meter breaststroke.
Kownslar, who coaches with the Cedar Park Typhoons swim club, entered the competition the day of the race and set state records in the 100 IM (1 minute, 11.38 seconds) and the 50 breaststroke (34.39).
The top local finishes in track all came from the CP Classic track club, including wins by Ashley Isham and Jordan Pfaff in distance events.
Isham (a freshman to be at Vista Ridge) racked up double gold medals in the girls' 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in the intermediate division, winning the 1,600 at 5:12.26 and the 3,200 at 11:34.69.
Pfaff locked up his gold medal in the junior boys' 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:06.47 and came in fourth in the 1,600 at 5:33.79.
Top 10 finishes came from: Taylor Dayton in the boys' intermediate 1,600 (5:10.72) and 3,200 (fifth, 10:52.96); Angela Nicole Chronis in the girls' 14 and under 800 (third, 2:43.41); Chase Isham in the boys' eight and under 800 (fifth, 3:04.49); Maria Chronis in the girls 18 and under 800 (2:45.94) and David Opheim in the boys' 16 and under 800 (tenth, 2:16.97).
The City of Cedar Park Track Club had two finalist at the Games of Texas in Kaleigh Frazier and Ryan Lemmons.
Frazier finished fourth in the girls' 18 and under 100-meter dash with a time of 12.91.
Lemmons finished sixth at 1:12.07 in the boys' 400 in the 9-10 age group.
