Camp Bow Wow seeking permit to open in Cedar Park

The Cedar Park City Council is considering a request for a special use zoning permit by a nationally known, high tech, pet friendly dog boarding operation. Camp Bow Wow has asked the Cedar Park Council for the permit for the new business after receiving approval of the Cedar Park Planning and Zoning Commission by a six to one vote.

Camp Bow Wow wants to place a franchise at 1805 Clover Lane in Cedar Park. The city council was scheduled to vote on the special permit zoning request after holding a second reading and public hearing this week.

"Owners bring their dogs to Camp Bow Wow based on our great reputation," said Frank Wetegrove, the franchise holder of the new Camp Bow Wow location.

Wetegrove currently operates four other Camp Bow Wow franchises, including one in Pflugerville. Wetegrove also has three franchises open in San Antonio.

In Cedar Park, a special use permit may be granted for certain land uses in one district that are not permitted in other zoning districts if the project is in conformity with the city's comprehensive plan. Thursday was the first reading and public hearing of the Camp Bow Wow special use permit request. No citizens testified in opposition to the special permit. The council did not vote on the zoning request.

"Getting the zoning change is a huge step for us," Wetegrove said. "We love the location and believe that we will be able to provide premier services to the local residents."

If the permit is approved, Wetegrove said he hoped the new Camp Bow Wow location would be open within a year.

"With the amount of growth in Cedar Park over the last three to seven years., we feel there is a definite need for these types of services," Wetegrove said.

One of Camp Bow Wow's selling points is that there are 140 Camp Bow Wow locations nationwide. Wetegrove said dog owners can travel and be accepted at locations where their dogs are comfortable and familiar with similar kennel layouts.
