Cedar Park Police have arrested the suspect in connection with the Saturday, Aug. 3, fatal shooting at the intersection of East Whitestone Boulevard and 183A toll in Cedar Park.
Jose Ivan Aviles Loza, 26, was arrested 9 p.m. Monday night in the Houston area. Police were assisted in the capture by the Houston Police Department and other surrounding agencies.
Loza is being charged with murder in connection with the Saturday morning shooting that left Fernando Chaparro Lopez, 22, dead and Lopez's uncle Jose Arely Chaparro-Benitez, 43, with critical injuries. Chaparro-Benitez was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and is currently recovering.
The shooting occurred at the traffic light intersection of East Whitestone and the northbound exit ramp from 183A toll. Police found Lopez deceased at the scene in the passenger seat of a Chevrolet pickup truck stopped at the red light. Several bullet holes were visible through the passenger window.
Chaparro-Benitez, the driver of the Chevrolet, suffered injuries but was able to step out of the vehicle and waive down drivers prior to being taken to the hospital.
Cedar Park Police Department Assistant Chief Mike Harmon provided a briefing about Saturday morning, when the pickup truck was still on the scene as crime scene investigators were continuing to work the scene. He said the suspect vehicle left the scene.
Police have confirmed Chaparro-Benitez and Lopez did not live in Cedar Park but worked for a company located in the city.
In a prior release, police said the suspect - Loza - and the deceased driver - Lopez - were known to each other. They said they believe there is no ongoing threat to the public and the shooting was not a random act of violence.
The police investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
