Cedar Ridge handily defeated Westwood in the regular season finale at Dragon Stadium 49-3 on Friday night. With both teams preparing for the postseason, the win earned Cedar Ridge the 13-6A title.
Running back Simi Bakare (100 yards, two touchdowns on 11 carries) and quarterback Ezekiel Coss (8-11, 168 yards, two touchdowns) led the way for the Raiders in their ninth win of the season. Cedar Ridge finishes the regular season at 9-1, 6-0, while Westwood wraps up regular season play at 5-5, 3-3.
With the postseason slate already set, the game served mostly as a playoff tuneup.
Each team's starters played just the first half in the Cedar Ridge victory. "Our number one deal was to stay healthy tonight," Cedar Ridge head coach Sam Robinson said after the win. "Got our guys some good playing time."
Even if the coaching staff of these two teams planned to use their starting players for the whole game, they wouldn't have needed to. The Cedar Ridge ground game plowed over the opposition in a dominant first half to put the game away.
Trey Williams and Simi Bakare (twice) scored on rushing touchdowns in the first half, followed up by Coss hitting Jaylen Ellis for two passing touchdowns in the easy victory. Deuce Vaughn and R.J. Robertson scored in the fourth for the Raiders after a scoreless third quarter.
"We set goals as we go on, and now that we've got that [district title], it's a big deal," Robertson continued. "We've got to get by next week first, but if we can do that, it's definitely a big deal. We're gonna go as far as we can."
Sources confirmed to Hill Country News that Westwood will travel to San Marcos to take on the Rattlers on Friday, Nov. 17th for their first-round, regional playoff match. Cedar Ridge will take on a 14-6A opponent, presumably at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex, next weekend.
