Chaos theory: District 13-6A could get crazy in final week

Posted

Things could get crazy in the final week of District 13-6A play.

Four teams are fighting it out for three playoff spots as Stony Point, Vista Ridge, Cedar Ridge and Round Rock are mathematically still in the postseason hunt.

Vandegrift is undefeated and clinched its second-straight District 13-6A title a couple of weeks ago.

The Tigers finish the season on the road against the Vipers, while the Raiders face off with Westwood on Friday night. The Dragons and Rangers clash to wrap up the regular season on Thursday at Dragon Stadium.

District 13-6A has a pair of predetermined rules that might come in to play this week:

  1. A group of tied teams is separated into a ‘mini district,’ and those with a better head-to-head record win the tiebreaker before figuring the points differential.
  2. No matter the final score, the most points a team can win or lose is 15 points per game (Example: If Team A beats Team B 44-7, Team A only gets +15 points in the tiebreaker scenario, and Team B would have -15). The teams with the best points against each other get the tiebreaker.

In every scenario, it doesn’t matter whether Stony Point wins or loses on Friday, the Tigers are in the playoffs.

There are multiple scenarios that would affect which teams get in, and what the order they would be in:

  • If Round Rock beats Vista Ridge on Thursday, Vandegrift beats Stony Point, and Cedar Ridge beats Westwood on Friday, it will create a four-way tie.

In this case, Stony Point (wins over VR and CR) and Vista Ridge (win over CR) would make the playoffs, and Cedar Ridge would be on the outside looking in.  Vandegrift and Stony Point would be the top two seeds.

  • If Vista Ridge beats Round Rock on Thursday, and Vandegrift and Cedar Ridge both win on Friday, Round Rock and Cedar Ridge would be tied, and the Raiders would make the playoffs due to their head-to-head win over the Dragons.

In this case, Vandegrift and Stony Point would be the top two seeds, while Vista Ridge would be the No. 3 seed and Cedar Ridge would be No. 4.

  • If Vista Ridge beat Round Rock on Thursday, Stony Point beats Vandegrift and Cedar Ridge beats Westwood on Friday, the Raiders would get in based on their head-to-head win over the Dragons.

In this case, Vandegrift and Stony Point would be the top two seeds, while Vista Ridge would be the No. 3 seed and Cedar Ridge would be No. 4.

  • If Round Rock beats Vista Ridge on Thursday, Stony Point beats Vandegrift and Cedar Ridge beats Westwood on Friday, Cedar Ridge, Vista Ridge and Round Rock would be in a three-way tie.

In this scenario, all the schools have a 1-1 record against each other. Vandegrift and Stony Point would be the top two seeds and the final two seeds would be determined by head-to-head points.

Entering Friday: Vista Ridge (+7), Cedar Ridge (+4), Round Rock (-11)

  • If Vista Ridge beats Round Rock on Thursday, Stony Point beats Vandegrift and Westwood beats Cedar Ridge on Friday, Cedar Ridge, Round Rock and Westwood would be in a three-way tie.

In this scenario, all the schools have a 1-1 record against each other. Vandegrift and Stony Point would be the top two seeds and the final two seeds would be determined by head-to-head points. In the event of a tie in head-to-head points, the teams would flip a coin.

Entering Friday: Cedar Ridge (+11), Round Rock (+4), Westwood (-15)
