Concordia University Texas will add the first varsity esports program of its kind in Central Texas starting this fall. More than 100 colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada already offer esports teams.
Concordia will enter the competitive gaming arena by sponsoring teams in League of Legends and Overwatch. Concordia graduate Marc Valdoria will coordinate and lead the first CTX esports teams and he announced open recruitment of student gamers. The school will over a combination of merit-based and esports scholarships.
“Experts identify gaming as an excellent way for collegians to build skills and aptitude in programming and non-cognitive skills,” said Concordia President & CEO Don Christian.
Participants will be required to meet the same standards and eligibility requirements as athletes involved in Concordia's other 15 NCAA intercollegiate sports.
