Leander falls to Ellison in season opener

Posted

Leander's opening night matchup against Killeen Ellison got off to an inauspicious start and then things got worse, as mistakes on both sides of the ball allowed the visiting Eagles to walk away from Bible Stadium with a 32-14 victory.

Quarterback Breezion Spiller's 143 yards and two touchdowns on a 7-of-14 passing performance led the way for the Eagles. In the first quarter, Spiller found wideout Jyaire Shorter (77 total yards receiving) to open the scoring with a 23-yard passing touchdown just minutes into the contest.

Ellison didn't stop there, as a seven-minute stretch in the second saw the Lions' hopes of beginning the season with a victory evaporate as the Eagles tallied 18 points on two Tye Hill rushing scores and a second passing score from Spiller's arm.

Leander quarterback Rashad Carter got the Lions on the board in the second half with a 10-yard rushing touchdown and the Lions would score again in the fourth quarter to bring the final score to 32-14.

Carter (12-for-21 passing for 192 yards, and 62 yards rushing) finished with a productive night on the stats sheet. Carter tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Flowers for Leander's final score of the night.

Running back Addison Larue made an impact, rushing for 61 yards on 19 carries.

Leander looks to rebound next week, hosting Pflugerville back at Bible Stadium Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
