The Leander ISD Board of Trustees voted Thursday to hire Dripping Springs ISD Superintendent Bruce Gearing as the new the Leander ISD Superintendent.
Gearing's contract is for three years with an annual salary of $310,000. His first day on the job will be Sept. 3.
He will replace former LISD Superintendent Dan Troxell, who is taking a position with the Texas Association of School Boards. His final day was July 31.
Named the 2019 Region 13 Superintendent of the Year, Gearing has served Dripping Springs ISD for 12 years. Prior to that, he served as superintendent for Marshall ISD from 4 years and as assistant superintendent at Mount Pleasant ISD for 3 years. He also has one year of experience as a junior high principal and four years of experience as an elementary principal.
Gearing is a native of South Africa who started his career teaching science and math at the high school level, including three years at international schools. He became a United States citizen in 2010. He and his wife Aldine have four children.
He earned his doctorate degree from Texas A&M – Commerce, a master’s degree from Texas A&M – Texarkana and bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and chemistry from the University of Witwatersrand.
