A nationwide explosion in demand for CBD oil could lead to a wave of new stores selling CBD oil locally. CBD oil, or cannabidiol, is still controversial, but its proponents say the health benefits are readily apparent to users. Like medical marijuana, CBD not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for medicinal use, but unlike marijuana, CBD oil is now legal in all 50 states.
Austin American Shaman is the first CBD oil product store to come to the Austin area, and the store has more than 1,500 customers since opening in September.
Owners Gene and Elsie Dietrich say that the need for CBD is nothing new, and opened their store locally, which is affiliated with a larger company, CBD American Shaman.
“It’s everywhere throughout the United States,” said Gene. “People face so many similar problems with pain that it’s not unique to a region or to any one group of people.”
According to CBD American Shaman, its mission is to be “dedicated to bringing wellness to the world through ultra-concentrated terpene rich CBD oil derived from all natural, high quality industrial hemp. It is legal in all 50 states and is 100% Organic, Gluten Free, Non GMO Hemp and has no heavy metals or insecticides, and is batch tested using Ultra Performance Convergence Chromatography.”
Company materials say CBD oil can relieve stress and help with pain management. Widely-circulated videos show CBD oil’s apparent effectiveness in treating seizures and even symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.
CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, and adding it to an oil such as coconut or hemp oil to make it easy for consumption. Gene explained that the process of creating CBD oil involves hemp plants are grown in Kentucky, which are then brought to Kansas for processing before distributing to stores like Austin American Shaman for sale.
Gene said that CBD has seen a shift in perspective since 2016.
“I’ve seen it grow in two years from being an unknown product to an unwanted product and, now, people are becoming more educated on CBD and either want it or want to sell it,” he said. “People do misunderstand what CBD oil is though. They don’t do their research and some sellers make the product synthetic. They do a real injustice to people who do it right and want to help others manage their pain.”
Elsie said that Austin American Shaman in about educating people on the product.
“We want to educate people along with helping them because there are so many people out there living in pain,” she said. “Everyone comes in here wanting to get off their medicine because they don’t like the way it makes them feel. We always tell them to talk with their doctors.”
More than 1,500 studies on CBD oil and how it works in the body have appeared in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Studies show that CBD oil may relieve pain, reduce inflammation, reduce nausea and digestive issues, relieve anxiety, reduce seizures, convulsions and muscle spasms, aid sleep and even promote bone growth.
“We don’t buy or resell from anyone else,” said Gene. “We grow our own, process our own and sell our own. We go from the seed to the counter. We don’t sell the high. We sell pain management.”
CBD American Shaman has 68 retail locations across Iowa, Florida, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia and Illinois.
The Dietrichs say they are planning to open up two additional locations in the local area: one in Cedar Park and one in Georgetown.
“We’re all about health, wellness and wellbeing,” added Gene. “We create an all-organic, natural product.”
Austin American Shaman is located at 13450 Research Blvd., Austin.
