Tim Smith resigns as head coach at Leander after second 1-9 season

Posted

Tim Smith resigned as head football coach and athletic coordinator at Leander following the Lions’ football season earlier this month.

Smith confirmed the move via text last week, but could not be reached for further comment.

The position was posted on the Leander ISD website on Nov. 8.

“We appreciate the many years of work and dedication Coach Smith has put into Leander ISD,” Leander ISD athletic director Jody Hormann said in a statement. “We wish him and his family all the best in his next endeavor. The Campus Athletic Coordinator/Head Football position is currently posted and will remain open throughout the winter break. We plan to begin the interview process in early January. Coach (Ashley) Atkinson, Assistant Campus Coordinator at LHS, will assume coordinator duties until a replacement has been named.”

In four seasons as head coach at Leander, Smith finished 8-32 and failed to make the playoffs. The school, which has one of the smallest enrollments in Class 6A, finished 1-9 the last two seasons.

Before taking over the top job, Smith spent two seasons as the Lions’ offensive coordinator. He won a state title as the Cedar Park quarterbacks’ coach in 2012. Before that, he spent time at Stony Point, Deer Park and New Caney.
