United Way Free Tax Prep Sets Record for Number of Clients Served
More than 1,500 Williamson County residents received free income tax preparation services this year through the United Way of Williamson County's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
For the 2017 tax filing season, 1,540 returns were filed by 37 IRS-certified volunteers at locations in Georgetown, Hutto, Leander and Taylor, a slight increase over previous years. This year, VITA volunteers donated more than 2,200 hours of time resulting in $2.2 million in refunds and more than $618,000 in Earned Income Credits.
The United Way says that the VITA program is part of an on-going effort to stabilize families and improve the financial security of low-to-moderate income households and elderly residents in Williamson County.
The program seeks to save its clients fees on commercial preparation services so that those clients can have more of their refund available to spend on items that impact everyday life such as child expenses, bills, household necessities, debt reduction or emergency savings.
“Since United Way of Williamson County expanded this service to include Georgetown, Hutto, Leander and Taylor in 2010, almost 8,100 clients have received $12.5 million in refunds,” said VITA Training Coordinator and Site Manager Angela Turner. “This program has helped individuals and families take steps toward achieving financial stability as well as providing a significant economic impact on the local economy.”
In collaboration with AARP Tax-Aide and Foundation Communities, United Way of Williamson County operates free tax preparation sites in Williamson County in partnership with the IRS. The cities of Cedar Park, Hutto, Leander, Round Rock and Taylor, as well as Sun City and The Getsemani Community Center in Georgetown, joined the three lead organizations to provide the tax services to residents again this year.
Since the 2010 tax season, 30,932 families and individuals received over $44.5 million in tax refunds at one of the nine free tax sites located in Williamson County.
