Vandegrift, Westwood athletes to compete in state tennis tournament

Athletes from Vandegrift and Westwood will represent the area at the state tennis tournament on May 16-17 in College Station.

The Vipers will send two teams, while the Warriors will see one team and two individuals compete at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center and the Omar Smith Intramural Tennis Center at Texas A&M University.

Regional finalists from last weekend’s tournament in Waco advance to the state tournament.

Westwood’s Jessica Lu swept Klein Oak’s Antonella Benavides 6-2, 6-4 to take home the regional title in girls’ singles. Daniel Antov lost to Garrett Skelly of The Woodlands 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to finish in second place in boys’ singles.

The Warriors’ mixed doubles team of Gaurav Singh and Kiana Graham fell 6-3, 6-3 to Caden Moortgat and Emma Gener of Plano West in the mixed doubles regional finals.

This will be the second trip to College Station for the Warriors this season after winning the team tennis title — the first in school history — last November. Graham won the state title in girls’ singles in 2017.

For Vandegrift, the boys’ doubles team of Blaine Kanak and Nic Cusano beat Julian Hadad and parker Eads from Houston Cypress Ranch 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-2 to win the regional title.

Anisha Apte and Gabby Cusano fell to The Woodlands’ Melissa Vizcardo and Avery Hulbig in the girls’ doubles regional final. Apte competed in the same event at the state tournament last year, while Cusano competed in girls’ singles the last two years.
