The Cedar Park High School Band won their third University Interscholastic League (UIL) state championship in a row on Tuesday night. The Rouse Raider High School Band finished fourth in the state, and Glenn High School, in only its fourth year, made its first trip to the state competition this year.

After much discussion and disagreement, the Leander Independent School District Board and Superintendent Dr. Bruce Gearing reached a compromise last week. With a 4-1 vote, the board approved the District Improvement Plan as presented, with the additional directive to the administration to reconsider and redefine the performance objectives for Goals 1-7.

The Leander Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a full-day prekindergarten plan for eligible students with a 5-1 vote. Vice President Aaron Johnson and Trustees Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia, Jim MacKay, Paw Waggoner and Elexis Grimes voting yes while Trustee Grace Barber-Jordan voted no and President Trish Bode abstained. more

A group of trailblazing parents addressed the importance of meaningful inclusion in special education at the Leander Independent School District board meeting Thursday. Several parents spoke about their own experiences with special education in LISD, and how those experiences will shape their children’s lives in the future.

The Leander Independent School District is currently seeking input from the community via a survey regarding elementary attendance zones for the 2021-22 school year. 


The district said the survey question is “What considerations are important to you for Leander ISD to include in a charter used to create and adopt new elementary school attendance zones for the 2021-22 school year?” 


The submission window for the elementary zoning survey will close Tuesday, Feb. 11. The survey can be found here under the Community Feedback tab.

The Leander Independent School District began teaching their chosen human sexuality curriculum, Austin LifeGuard (ALG), in October. LISD Communications Coordinator Matt Mitchell said the district has used the same program for at least 13 years. 


Review of the human sexuality curriculum occurs every three years through the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), for grades 7, 8 and 9. 


“SHAC looks at several different curriculums noting the requirements from the state and determines which curriculum to recommend for use in LISD,” Mitchell said. 


In 2018, the LISD SHAC reviewed the ALG, Big Decisions and Scott and White curriculums. Ultimately, the subcommittee recommended that LISD continue their partnership with ALG, at a cost of $35,000. The LISD School Board at the time, approved the recommendation.

Rouse High School Freshman Ava Mongoven addressed the Leander Independent School District Board about gun violence at last week’s meeting. 


“Our school’s culture has been shifted from being one of learning and growth to being underlined with fear and intimidation of gun violence,” Mongoven said. “Growing up in a generation of school shootings is a complete nightmare.” 


Mongoven said she does not know any student that feels safe in school.
