Beat the heat with frozen treats: Austin Ice Cream Festival takes place Aug. 12

Two dozen ice cream and frozen treat vendors, food trucks and activities for the family planned

Hot August heat waves got you down? Entertaining your kids on summer vacation got you feeling delirious? There’s soon to be an event the whole family can enjoy, all while enjoying some cold treats to cool off with.

The 11th annual Austin Ice Cream Festival will be returning to Fiesta Gardens along Lady Bird Lake this year, with two dozen frozen treat vendors Saturday, Aug. 12 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. More than 7,500 attendees are expected, organizers said.

Tickets range from $15 for general admission and three ice cream samples, to VIP tickets at $25 for early entry, and air conditioned lounge and five samples, and $44 pass that includes a 10 ounce YETI Rambler. Children ages 8 or younger get in free. There’s also a $9 option that skips the festival, but grants access to the after dark showing of a “classic summer flick”, that has yet to be announced.

Last week, the ice cream and frozen treat samplers were announced. This year’s festival includes samples from H-E-B Creamy Creations, Central Market Small Batch Craft Ice Cream, Swoon by H-E-B, Amy's Ice Cream, Austin Scoops, Thai Fresh, Dippin' Dots, Moojo, NadaMoo! and Cold Cookie Company. Frozen treat samplers are Shaved Ice Island, Snow Monster, GoodPop, Steel City Pops, Southern Bunny Shaved Ice and Odd Pop. The savory food vendors include The Evil Wiener, Burro Cheese Kitchen, DFG Noodles, Shake Shack and Shawarma Point. More samplers are being added daily.

Beyond indulging in some serious frozen delicacies, there will be several activities throughout the day for all ages, numerous contests and activities including ice cream eating and frozen treat making competitions, a human foosball court, lawn games, a dunk tank, rock wall, water gun station, remote control boat racing, and an after dark movie in the park. There will also be alcoholic beverages for purchase.

"The Austin Ice Cream Festival is the ultimate family summer celebration," said Austin Ice Cream Festival founder Doug Lyon. "This is a great chance to come together with friends and family to chill out and enjoy a unique Austin event. We are excited to feature new and interesting frozen treat flavors from some of Austin's favorite makers and new ones just coming on the scene."

This year's festival will also include two live music stages for both adults and kids with music presented by KUTX. The lineup includes Suzanna Choffel, DJ Chorizo Funk, Adam and the Bull Shark with more talent to be announced soon.

Ice Cream Contests

This year's festival features several contests seeking the best in frozen treats.

Attendees will get the chance to vote on every sampler, as well as submitted homemade ice cream in "Fan Favorite," "Professional Category" and "Homemade Category." The winners will be named "Best of ATX" and receive a commemorative Ice Cream Festival spoon trophy.

This "Best of ATX Frozen Treat" contest will run alongside Austin Ice Cream Festival ice cream eating and popsicle stick sculpture contests. In addition to these competitions, there will also be an Ice Cream Eating Contest for attendees to put their taste buds to the test as they race to eat frozen treats. There will be multiple divisions for half-gallon, pints, half-pints for the kids, team challenges and more. There’s also going to be a Popsicle Stick Sculpture Contest for contestants to create a sculpture made entirely out of popsicle sticks either at home or on-site at the fest and enter to win.
