Democratic challenger to Carter finds noose on campaign sign

A Democratic congressional candidate challenger to longtime Rep. John Carter found a noose slung over her campaign sign Thursday.

Dr. Christine Eady Mann, a Cedar Park Democratic candidate for Congressional District 31, said her husband Travis had posted the campaign sign on in Leander near Baker Lane and County Road 270 Thursday. The landowners found out about the noose Friday.

"I hope that whoever did this understands that this will not intimidate me," Mann said on her Facebook page. "I will not back down."

Mann said she was concerned about the owners of the property, who are a lesbian couple.

"They are a lovely lesbian couple who lead quiet lives and just want to live in their place of choice in peace," Mann said. "They told me today that they face harassment on a regular basis. This is not ok."

Fellow Democratic congressional candidate Kent Lester issued a statement in the aftermath of Mann's post Friday evening.

"As proud residents of the 31st District, Brigid and I are both shocked and appalled at the actions taken against Dr. Mann and her campaign today," Lester's statement reads. "This behavior is completely intolerable and is an example of why we have much work to do in striving to restore a civil degree of discourse in our State, Local, and National politics."

Hill Country News reached out to the Williamson County Democrats for comment Friday evening but was unable to connect.
