No. 5 Westlake survives scare from Vandegrift

Posted

Justin Moore converted a fourth down and 25 by connecting with junior wide receiver Bryson Brown at the goal line to give Vandegrift its first lead of the night over No. 5 Westlake with just seconds remaining, but Wisconsin-commit Nakia Watson took a screen pass 56 yards on Westlake’s ensuing possession to set up a 40-yard game-winning field goal to help the Chaparrals escape with a 33-31 victory.

After a scoreless first quarter that saw both teams punt on a pair of opening drives, Chaps kicker Gabriel Lozano kicked two second-quarter field goals to lift Westlake to a 13-3 lead at the half. Both quarterbacks came up big in the passing game and had key rushes to extend drives, but Watson’s effort on the ground seemed the difference in the second half.

Vandegrift fought back late, outscoring Westlake 21-10 in the final quarter, but Lozano came through again for the Chaps as time expired.

The Vipers fall to 2-3, 0-1 in District 25-6A and will host Lehman next week.

Westlake improves to 5-0 ahead of a road trip to Hays next Friday.
